"Devdas"
First of all, before discussing about the Novel - "Devdas"
written by Sharadchandra Chattopadhyay (Sharad Babu) , I would like to
thank Ramanlal Soni who translated the the Bengali Novel "Devdas" in
gujarati. Only because of this translation, we are able to read the
beautiful Tragedy-Devdas.
We can
also say that Sharad Babu is not only the writer of Bengal, not only the
writer of India but also the 'Biggest Man of Tragedy' of the world.
This novel contains sixteen chapters. The whole novel is
described in omniscient view and plain narrative.In this novel, we can
find very intrusting and unanswerable characters. Parvati , Chandramukhi
and Devdas are three main characters in this novel. Moreover, Narayan
Mukharji - father of Devdas, Nilkanth Chakravarti - father of Parvati,
Dharmdas, Bhuvnmohan Chaudhari - husband of Parvati, Mahendra,Yashoda
and vinodlal -children of Bhuvan Chaudhari and the friend of Devdas -
Chunibabu and etc. These all the characters are well portrayed in the
novel by Sharad Babu.
The character of Devdas is the symbol of the man, who spoil his own life with his own hand because he has the lack of making decision at right time and right place. And only because of this lackness he destroy his whole life. But it's also true that he is the man who loves Parvati and he is not able to forget his beloved.
When the parents of Devdas refuses to marry with Parvati because she is
the daughter of Chakrvarti Family as per believe that they took cash or
other extra things from the boy's parents, he can't bear and when
Parvati's friend-Manorama says her that now Parvati can't do anything
about this, Parvati says......
"મનોદીદી, તું અમસ્તી માથામાં સિંદૂર પુરે છે. કોને સ્વામી કહેવાય એ જાણતી પણ નથી ! તેઓ મારા સ્વામી ન હોત, મારી બધી લજ્જા, શરમથી પર ન હોત તો હું આમ મરવા બેસત નહીં. તે સિવાય, દીદી માણસ જયારે મરવા બેસે ત્યારે તે વિચારી જુએ છે કે ઝેર કડવું છે કે ગળ્યું? "

And that's why she added to Devdas that......
"મારા ક્લન્કની વાત કરો છો? ના, મને એમાં ક્લન્ક નથી. તમારી પાસે
ગુપ્ત રીતે આવી હતી એટલા માટે જો મારી નિંદા થતી હોય તો નિંદા મને અડકી પણ
શકે નહીં."
Sharad Babu says that, When
human comes in conflict and consequences he can't go anywhere and
anyway. And as same happens with Parvati that......
"એમાં આશા કેટલી છે અને નિરાશા કેટલી છે. તોપણ એક વાત તો છે
જ, કે માણસ ગમે તેવા દુ:ખ ને સમયે જયારે આશાનિરાશાનો કાંઠો-કિનારો જોવા પણ ન
પામે, ત્યારે પણ દુર્બળ મન ખુબ બીતું બીતું પણ આશા તરફ જ ઢળી, તેને જ વળગી
રહે છે."
And the climax of the tragedy
comes across us when Devdas writes letter to Parvati in coming
exaggerative perception that.......
" આજે બે દિવસ થયા મને તારા જ વિચાર આવ્યા કર્યા છે. પિતામાતા કોઈની ઈચ્છા નથી કે , આપણા લગ્ન થાય.તને સુખી કરવા જતા તેમને આવડો મોટો આઘાત આપવો પડે- એ મારાથી બને એમ નથી. તે ઉપરાંત, તેમની વિરુદ્ધ એ કામ હું કરું જ શી રીતે? હવે કદી કાગળ લખીશ એમ આજે તો લાગતું નથી.તેથી આ કાગળ માં જ લખું છું. રાતની વાત યાદ કરીને હું ખુબ કલેશ પામું છું.કારણ કે તારા જેવી ગર્વિતાને એમ કરતા પહેલા કેટલું ભારે દુ:ખ થયું હશે એ હું જાણું છું.

બીજી એક વાત- તને હું ખુબ ચાહતો હોઉં, એવું કદી મને
લાગ્યું જ નથી, આજ પણ તારા માટે મારા હ્દયમાં અપાર વ્યથા પામું છું એમ પણ
નથી. માત્ર એનું જ મને દુ:ખ થાય છે કે, તું મારે કારણે દુઃખી થઈશ. પ્રયત્ન
કરીને મને ભૂલી જજે; અને આંતરિક આશીર્વાદ આપું છું કે તું એમાં સફળ જજે."
And when Parvti marries with Bhuvanbabu, Devdas couldn't bear
because he loved Parvati too much and at Kalkatta he started drinking
'Daru' unlimited and at that time he meet the woman, who is the the
symbol of real survival - Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi loves Devdas but
Devdas never appericiate her because he knows that he can never give her
position of Parvati. He never expresses his love for Chandramukhi but
he can't stop his heart to fall in love with Chandramukhi. And Devdas
says..........
" હું કઈ જીરવવાને દારૂ પીતો નથી, પણ અહીં રહેવું છે એટલે પીઉં છું."
"જો કદી પણ દારૂ છોડું- જોકે છોડવાનો નથી, - તો પછી કઈ અહીં કોઈ
દી આવવાનો નથી. ભારે દુઃખમાં દારૂ શરૂ કર્યો હતો, મારી વિપદનો, દુઃખનો એક એ
બધું! બીજી તું - તને ભૂલી શકતો નથી, છોડી શકતો નથી."
And Devdas's mentle condition effected to his physical strength, and
he losses his control from his ownself.The circumstances comes around to
him that he can't forget Parvati and also not able to accept
Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi is the symbol of true love that she also
knows that Devdas can't give her love back to her in this life, then
even she loves her without any kind of acceptation.So, she hates her
ownself.she says.....
" વચ્ચે-વચ્ચે નશાના ઘેનમાં તમારા મોઢે અનેક વાતો સાંભળી છે.પણ તેમ છતાંય મને ખાતરી પડતી નથી કે પાર્વતી એ તમને છેતર્યા છે: ઉલટું, એમ લાગે છે કે તમે પોતે જ પોતાને છેતર્યાં છે.
" વચ્ચે-વચ્ચે નશાના ઘેનમાં તમારા મોઢે અનેક વાતો સાંભળી છે.પણ તેમ છતાંય મને ખાતરી પડતી નથી કે પાર્વતી એ તમને છેતર્યા છે: ઉલટું, એમ લાગે છે કે તમે પોતે જ પોતાને છેતર્યાં છે.
કેમકે ........આ જીવનમાં સ્નેહનો વેપાર ઘણો વખત કર્યો છે, પણ માત્ર એક જ વાર 'સ્નેહ' કર્યો છે."
In this sense, we can say that Devdas's love is not his strength but
it's his weakeness and this weakness leads him to the tragic end. In
the last meeting with Chandramukhi, Devdas says that...........
"તમારા બેમાં કેટલો બધો ફેર છે, ને પાછો કેટલો મેળ છે! એક જણ
ગર્વિતા, ઉદ્ધત! બીજી કેટલી શાંત, કેટલી સંયમી; એનાથી કશું સહન થતું નથી
અને તું કેટલું સહન કરે છે! તેને કેટલો યશ, કેટલી કીર્તિ અને તારે કેટલું
કલંક! બધા જ એના પર કેવો પ્રેમ રાખે છે, અને તને કોઈ ચાહતું નથી, તો પણ હું
ચાહું છું, ચાહું જ છું."
"પાપ-પુણ્યનો
ન્યાયાધીશ તને શો ન્યાય આપશે એ હું જાણતો નથી! પણ, મૃત્યુ પછી જો ફરી મિલન
થાય તો તારાથી અળગો હું રહી શકીશ નહીં"
He feels that there is nothing for him in this world and he takes his
last breathe in 'Hatipota' infront of the Bhuvndas's Haveli. When he
dies, he wants to see only single time to Parvati, as he promised her.
But he dies at night and Parvati gets this news at morning. But the
important thing to be noted is that, he feels that only the character of
Chandramukhi is proudable for him and tears falls down from his eyes.
Really, we can also say that the 'Death of Devdas is the
Death without Witness" and I think there is no bigger pain than this.
As it is said that.....
"Who loves truly, must survives and tolerate!"
Thus, Sharad Babu has beautifully designed the picture of love
tragedy, and there is always stand lake of words to praise him that he
gave us the greatest tragedy-Devdas.
Because......
'Devdas is not only tragedy of love, or Devdas, or
Chandramukhi, or Parvati, but its the tragedy of all human life who
loves someone and only because of own foolishness and the lack of
understanding level and due to it, they have to loses their love!"
