Study of Films (rather frames)

 Hello friends ,

Have you ever tried to think of how many films you have watched till now? Perhaps it would be difficult to answer in particular number because our generation is habituated of watching the movies, serials and so many advertisements we come across in our day to day life. What the problem is, we are cultivated to watch the film rather than studying. I must say, watching the films and studying or rather reading the films both give very significant views about the frames. To read or to study the frames is not a cup of tea, as it is said that literature is the mirror of the society – films are also a part of literature, part of society and reflects the present era.

Not only literary writers and poet critique the time and society but directors also play very key role in mirroring the society. It also suggests how society ought to be but emphasis more on how it is. In comparison to literature and any literary works films mirrors the reality very fast.

Only death and tragedy are not a tragedy and painful but living the life is more pitiful than the tragedy and death itself. To be alive is something more terrible than the longer sleep. So, films are not just for entertainment or passing out the times but it satires and uncovers the biases encoded.  We all are very well aware about satire and some of the 20th century’s writers and directors played very crucial role in this. Of course, Charlie Chaplin is one of them.

What are the frames?

‘The frames’ when studying visual arts, refers to the four lenses we use to look at art, in order to find meaning in an art work. These are subjective, structural, cultural and modern/post-modern frames.

Four frames

The four frames overlap and intersect at times, but they provide distinct points of view from which to discuss and art work or a body of work. Using all four frames we can gain a holistic and deep understanding of an artwork.

These four links will help you to study the frames.
